lake tyrrell salt lake, sea lake

Mamma didn’t intend to time our visit to Lake Tyrrell salt lake with sunset but my goodness, she is immensely impressed with her luck! Lake Tyrrell is a spectacular environment and perfect stop on a road trip up the Calder Highway in the heart of the Mallee region.

Mamma has learnt Tyrrell is derived from a local Aboriginal word ‘Direl’ meaning SKY or SPACE. This is the largest inland salt lake in Australia and is an international attraction - that infamous vast Australian landscape is so awesomely on display here, where the sky becomes the Earth and the Earth becomes the sky.

A viewing platform allows you to suspend between sky and water as you stare at the broad horizon. Ample signposting, parking and a well maintained toilet block exist nearby, making this a worthwhile destination or must-do stop on a road trip.

Winter is the best time to visit as the lake has water in it (it’s dry most of the year), and sunrise, sunset and night are the most ideal times of day to enjoy the spectacle of salt pink hues and a mirrored sky.
